Access At Home Physiotherapy is experienced in working within the insurance industry to provide rehabilitation services to people immediately on discharge from hospital until they are able to access a rehab center, community clinic or out patient facility. Everyone is entitle to the health care provider of their choice and can arrange their own physiotherapy service to continue immediately when discharged home. The transition home can be seamless with a smooth continuum of care if arrangements are made while still in hospital. Early rehabilitation intervention can accelerate the recovery process and prevent unnecessary deconditioning as well as support the client and family through a very stressful period.
Much can be done in the comfort of your own home. All rehabilitation costs are funded through the motor vehicle insurance, ie physiotherapy services, hospital beds, aids for Activities of Daily Living (ie. bathing aids), exercise equipment (weights, bikes, etc), and mobility aids (walkers, wheelchairs, crutches, etc)
In Ontario, automobile insurance is regulated by the Financial Services Commission of Ontario, and should anyone be injured in any incident involving a motor vehicle (ie. as a pedestrian, passenger, driver, or cyclist there is a clearly stated protocol to follow. Refer to the following website for information: http://www.fsco.gov.on.ca
If you are injured in an accident it is important to report it to your insurance company within 7 days, regardless who is at fault. Visit the FSCO website to read the booklet "After an Auto Accident: Understanding the Claims Process"
Accident Benefits (from FSCO the website)
You can claim accident benefits (also known as statutory accident benefits or no-fault benefits) from the insurance company if you have been injured in an automobile accident.
Accident benefits are provided according to the Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule (SABS), which is a regulation made under the Insurance Act. You should be aware that the benefits and the rules differ depending on when you had your accident.
If you qualify, you may receive several kinds of accident benefits. The rules are complicated, but the following list will give you an idea about what may be available:
- Income replacement benefits help replace lost income if an employed or self-employed claimant is disabled.
- Caregiver benefits pay certain childcare or other caregiver expenses if a stay-at-home parent or other caregiver is unable to care for a child or other person in need of care.
- Non-earner benefits are paid if a claimant who is not employed or self-employed is unable to carry on with normal life.
- Medical and rehabilitation benefits pay for treatment and rehabilitation assistance that is not covered by OHIP or another disability insurance plan.
- Attendant care benefits pay for someone to look after a seriously injured claimant.
- Funeral expenses and death benefits are paid if an insured person dies as a result of the accident.
- Depending on your circumstances, you may also be entitled to other benefits – for example, benefits to pay for housekeeping assistance, visitors’ expenses, repair or replacement of eyeglasses or clothing damaged in the accident, or case manager services.
- FSCO’s consumer information brochures, After an Auto Accident: Understanding the Claims Process and FSCO’s Dispute Resolution Services: A Real Alternative (PDF), explain accident benefits and the claims process in more detail.
